As a national leader in breast conservation surgery, Hoag is training the next generation of young surgeons through fellowship programs supported by the community.
Training the next generation of young surgeons through fellowship programs is one of the ways Hoag continues to invest in the future of health care. For patients in our community, this means greater access to the latest surgical techniques and procedures. As a national leader in breast conservation surgery, Hoag’s commitment to surgical innovation and training is evidenced by the 47 breast surgical oncology fellows who received training at Hoag and are now improving the lives of women around the country.
Pioneered in the 1980s by Hoag’s very own Dr. Melvin Silverstein, Gross Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, the oncoplastic technique combines the skills of oncologic surgery and plastic surgery to remove cancerous tumors while preserving the breast. Developed as a superior alternative to disfiguring lumpectomies, oncoplastic breast surgery provides women with better results and improved quality of life after cancer.
Dr. Deena Hossino, Muzzy Family Endowed Fellow in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
Thanks to the Muzzy family, Hoag celebrated ten years of philanthropic support for the oncoplastic breast surgery fellowship program this August. Deena Hossino, MD, was the latest surgeon to be awarded the Muzzy Family Endowed Fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at Hoag. While Dr. Hossino is the tenth Muzzy Endowed Fellow, her fellowship year marks the first in an exciting change for the program.
As of 2024, Hoag’s oncoplastic breast surgery fellowship is the first in the country to focus exclusively on this innovative technique . Rather than completing a four-month oncoplastic rotation at Hoag as part of a breast surgical oncology fellowship, Hoag fellows will now undergo an additional year of specialized training, led by Dr. Sadia Khan, director of integrative breast oncology, after they complete a traditional breast surgical oncology fellowship.
As the first full-time oncoplastic breast fellow at Hoag, Dr. Hossino will participate in approximately 40 cases per month and has the freedom to design her schedule with program faculty for the most advanced training. When her fellowship is complete, Dr. Hossino will be one of the most specialized in oncoplastic breast surgery in the country.
“Philanthropy at Hoag has been so valuable in supporting the oncoplastic technique. The Muzzy family has been so generous. It’s a special program because every person that Dr. Silverstein trains can go out and train hundreds more to spread the mission of oncoplastics,” Dr. Hossino said.
