How Circle 1000 Support Helped to Recruit Two Leading Hoag Physician-Scientists

Circle 1000 funding plays a pivotal role in recruiting leading oncologists to the Hoag Family Cancer Institute and supporting their programming once here. In 2022, we directed $200,000 toward the recruitment of Carlos Becerra, M.D. as medical director of cancer research. A renowned researcher who previously served as Director of the Innovative Clinical Trials Center at Baylor University Medical Center in Texas, Dr. Becerra already has opened more opportunities than ever for Hoag patients to participate in phase I clinical trials. In August, he was named the new chair holder of the Margaret Givan Larkin Endowed Chair in Developmental Cancer Therapeutics.
“Dr. Becerra is stewarding the Hoag Family Cancer Institute’s ‘privademic’ mission, offering top-tier clinical trials in a patient-centered community hospital setting,” said Burton Eisenberg, M.D., Grace E. Hoag Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, Hoag Family Cancer Institute. “Under his leadership, we are expanding our impact on cancer prevention, detection, and treatment, with more than 100 clinical trials underway.”

Circle 1000's impact on physician recruitment continues with $200,000 allocated toward bringing Simon Khagi, MD, to the Hoag Family Cancer Institute in fall 2023 as medical director of the Brain and Spine Tumor Program. As a specialist in neuro-oncology, a field characterized by significant unmet needs and poor patient outcomes, Dr. Khagi will continue his research in areas such as glio¬blastoma and metastatic brain cancer at Hoag.
"I decided to join Hoag because of its strong research infrastruc¬ture and a track record of scientific contributions,” said Dr. Khagi, previously a medical director at Dartmouth’s Norris Cotton Can¬cer Center and the University of North Carolina's Neuro-Oncology Program. “I believe that Hoag has all the right ingredients to foster the development of novel clinical trials that will advance our field into the future and help save lives."
