Hoag Welcomes Dr. Kenneth Chang: Pioneering Gastroenterologist and Compassionate Care Advocate

As executive medical director, Dr. Chang will lead the next wave of innovation in care at Hoag’s Digestive Health Institute.

Kenneth Chang, MD, executive medical director of Hoag’s Digestive Health Institute, is one of the organization’s newest elite recruits. He joins Hoag from the University of California, Irvine, where he built UCI’s Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center and its Digestive Health Institute. Hoag’s innovative and compassionate approach to care, made possible in part by philanthropy, inspired Dr. Chang to make the move to Hoag, where he will usher in the next wave of advancements in digestive care.

“The future of digestive health care is on the horizon, and Hoag is at the forefront of research and innovation to bring the latest medical and interventional applications to Orange County,” said Dr. Chang. “I look forward to working with Hoag to create a place where innovation fueled by compassion is the driving force behind everything we do for our patients and the community.”

Dr. Chang’s appointment comes at a transformational time in digestive health care at Hoag; the specialty is a pillar of Hoag’s expansion in Irvine. In his role at Hoag, Dr. Chang is leading a team of multidisciplinary experts focused on personalized care plans and increased access to new treatment options and clinical trials. The team will offer a comprehensive suite of services at the forthcoming Cancer & Digestive Health Institute on Hoag’s Sun Family Campus in Irvine, scheduled to be complete in 2026.

Thanks to donor support for the Boldly Hoag campaign, the new pavilion will house six advanced endoscopy rooms equipped with cutting-edge technology. In the meantime, a new GI lab at 16405 Sand Canyon Avenue will provide Dr. Chang with a state-of-the-art space to see patients, in addition to the Digestive Health Clinic on Hoag’s Newport Beach campus.

Among many career accolades, Dr. Chang is a founding board member of the American Foregut Society, has pioneered numerous clinical trials and treatment methods, and has trained more than 50 world-leading interventional endoscopists in emerging technologies and techniques. His reputation and vision are expected to elevate Hoag’s Digestive Health Institute to international prominence.
