Gifts at Work
Hoag has a long and robust partnership with the private community. In fact, it’s because members of the community have invested in Hoag that it has grown into a trusted, nationally recognized healthcare leader. Countless patients and their families, physicians, nurses and staff have been touched by the kindness of our donors. Philanthropy has helped Hoag create programs, recruit staff, acquire technology and open or upgrade facilities - all things that would not have been possible without the generosity of our community.
Below are highlights of a few recent examples of donor-supported initiatives at Hoag Orthopedic Institute:
Orthopedic Nurse Navigators Provide One-on-One Care Before, During and After Surgery
A helping hand, a communication hub, an expert clinical resource on call and a friend to lean on - Hoag Orthopedic Institute nurse navigators support their patients on every level. These patient care experts partner with patients and their care givers weeks before their scheduled surgery, assist them through the inpatient process and stand by them during rehabilitation. They also stay in contact for up to two years after surgery to monitor patient outcomes in terms of reduced pain and increased function. Throughout the course of treatment, the nurse navigators proactively provide every conceivable service a patient needs for as pleasant and stress-free an experience as possible.
Manager, Clinical Efficiency and Research Finds Ways to Improve Patient Outcomes
The newly created Manager, Clinical Efficiency and Research position at Hoag Orthopedic Institute is already having a positive impact on patients. The position is responsible for assisting with research projects and using research to improve patient care and satisfaction while increasing value and efficiency. Currently in progress is an industry-sponsored trial in collaboration with Hoag Orthopedic Institute, Cedars Sinai and the UC San Francisco to register and track orthopedic joint replacement patients and gather and analyze data that will assist in improving outcomes and reducing complications. This position also develops, implements and tracks processes and procedures to support innovation in the delivery of care. Initiatives include efficient medication and blood product management, emergency transfers from other facilities and patient flow, from check in to check out - all to maximize patient safety and enhance the patient experience.
Kathy Prim Orthopedic Nurse Scholarship Fund Supports Hoag Orthopedic Nurses with Opportunities for Continuing Education
One of the most challenging public health issues today is the severe nursing shortage. Providing scholarships for nurses to advance their careers and deliver outstanding patient care is one of the most important ways that Hoag recruits and retains excellent nurses. Donors to the Kathy Prim Endowment Fund for Nursing education have not only helped to provide scholarships for Hoag orthopedic nurses seeking education and development, they have honored the memory of Kathy Prim, RN, ONC, an orthopedic nurse who exemplified world-class nursing care for over 30 years.
