Gifts at Work
Hoag has a long and robust partnership with the private community. In fact, it’s because members of the community have invested in Hoag that it has grown into a trusted, nationally recognized healthcare leader. Countless patients and their families, physicians, nurses and staff have been touched by the kindness of our donors. Philanthropy has helped Hoag create programs, recruit staff, acquire technology and open or upgrade facilities - all things that would not have been possible without the generosity of our community.
Below are highlights of a few recent examples of donor - supported initiatives at Hoag Family Cancer Institute:
Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center Renovation
The Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center is one of the largest cancer centers in Southern California offering state-of-the-art cancer care in a comforting, patient-centered environment. The Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center is currently in the process of upgrading the interiors to create a more contemporary style. Improvements include updating the colors, finishes, flooring and furniture in the lobbies, hallways and dressing rooms of each floor. The bathrooms are also being upgraded. The overall impact will be to modernize the aesthetics for the benefit of patients, families and staff.
Knowledge Sharing at Hoag
Melvin J. Silverstein, M.D., F.A.C.S., medical director of Hoag Breast Care Center, and his team, are reaching out to teach other physicians through a variety of knowledge sharing methods including breast surgery fellowships. Hoag, in partnership with the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine, is providing a nationally-recognized breast surgery fellowship program at Hoag Breast Care Center. Fellows rotate every two months between Hoag, USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and USC County Hospital. At Hoag, breast surgery fellows gain experience in innovative oncoplastic surgical techniques and the new, leading - edge breast imaging technologies.
Creative Expressions Art Program
Cancer patients, survivors and their families rave about the Creative Expressions art program held quarterly in the auditorium of the Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center. The program is based on the idea that the creative process of art enhances quality of life. Workshop participants use different art mediums at each meeting and past projects have included painting on canvas, hat making and creating treasure boxes. No art experience is necessary to enjoy the workshops and participants leave class with a work of art. All workshops are led by Newport Beach artist, Carole Akins.
